In addition to the individual mandate, college students in Massachusetts have been required to have health insurance since 1989. In order to enroll, they must carry health insurance through their school’s Qualifying Student Health Insurance Program (QSHIP) plan or show they have comparable alternative coverage.
CP has prepared a one-page summary about what QSHIP covers, what limits exist and how it works with state health programs.
DENTAL?!?!?!?
My school offered some dental insurance, but there was an expiration date and now I have to have major work done. My mother has MassHealth but what am I supposed to do? Who should I call? Where should I look?
Re: DENTAL?!?!?!?
I think you should talk to an outreach and enrollment worker who can help you navigate the system to get whatever dental care could be available to you. I would recommend using our map of enrollment sites to find someone near you or calling Health Care For All's helpline at (800) 272-4232. If nothing else, you may be able to access some dental services at a Community Health Center through the Health Safety Net. I will also email you shortly. Hope this helps,
Laura
Thank you for QSHIP info!
I really want to thank Community Partners for posting information on QSHIP and encouraging comments and blogs on it. Here in the Greater Boston area, a number of our partners in the HealthMINT Outreach and Enrollment network of organizations -- who help people sign up for health insurance and navigate the complex health system -- mentioned people were losing MassHealth and Commonwealth Care insurance coverage when they became students and were became eligible for QSHIP. They pointed out that the new students were losing a better type of coverage and forced to go on QSHIP, which did not meet their full needs. I thought I knew the options by name, and I wasn't even aware of QSHIP as one of the student/youth types of coverage.
