MassHealth status influences Extra Help enrollment

Submitted by Meg Kroeplin - ... on December 12, 2006 - 2:34pm.

Medicare beneficiaries who are no longer eligible for MassHealth may remain enrolled in their Part D plan, but they will no longer be automatically enrolled into Social Security's Low-Income Subsidy ('Extra Help'). Instead, they must now actively apply for the subsidy. Applications to the Low-Income Subsidy program can be made at any time.

Beneficiaries who are denied 'Extra Help' for any reason must pay the entire cost for a Part D plan. In order to allow people in this situation to choose a lower-cost plan, Part D open enrollment for them will be extended through March 31, 2007.
