This heating season, more Massachusetts residents will be able to get help paying oil, electric, natural gas, propane, kerosene, wood, coal, and/or other heating costs. The LIHEAP program (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), commonly known as "fuel assistance," has raised its income eligibility guidelines (PDF) to 60% or less of the median annual income. For example, the cap is now $53,608 for a family of four.

For information on where to refer eligible clients, see this directory by Massachusetts city/town.

Those whose incomes fall just above the fuel assistance guidelines may be able to get help from the Good Neighbor Energy Fund, which offers assistance to people between 60-80% of Massachusetts’ median income.

Clients may also call the Massachusetts Heat Line toll-free at 1-800-632-8175 for information. In addition, many local utilities offer help with reducing home energy costs, which can also be obtained by calling MassSave at 1-800-632-8300.

More information is available at the official LIHEAP site.
