New information resource for unemployed

Submitted by Anne on August 12, 2009 - 10:29am.

BMC HealthNet Plan has created an easy-to-use guide to healthcare coverage options for unemployed Massachusetts residents (PDF). The guide, written specifically for unemployed people, outlines four broad potential coverage options:

  • COBRA coverage through the previous employer (including federal premium assistance)
  • Coverage through a spouse’s or domestic partner’s employer-sponsored health plan
  • The Medical Security Program (MSP)
  • Commonwealth Care and MassHealth (for some who have been unemployed over a long period of time, or do not qualify for unemployment benefits)

Information about how to apply and where to get help is also included.

Detailed information about MSP (PDF) and a map of outreach programs that can help people apply for state-sponsored health benefits are also available on Community Partners' website.

Boston Medical Center (BMC) HealthNet Plan is one of the health maintenance organizations that manages healthcare coverage for Massachusetts residents participating in MassHealth and Commonwealth Care.
