Medicare Part D news; changes for some receiving "Extra Help"

Submitted by Community Partners on October 11, 2006 - 4:30pm.

Medicare Part D members who wish to change their current prescription drug coverage may do so when Medicare Open Enrollment begins on November 15. CMS has announced new plan options with lower costs and more comprehensive coverage - including zero deductibles and coverage in the "donut hole" - for 2007. Members who are satisfied with their current coverage need take no action.

About 500,000 people nationwide who were deemed eligible for the "Extra Help" low-income subsidy are receiving notices that they are losing their "deemed" status and must now apply for the subsidy. Most are changing status because they no longer qualify for Medicaid. Click here (PDF) for more details and for helpful web-based enrollment resources from the Access to Benefits Coalition.
