The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently awarded a two year, $3,950,440 Medicaid Transformation Grant to MassHealth. MassHealth will use the funds to collaborate with the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics to convert birth and death certificates into an electronic format.

This change will allow MassHealth applicants and members to verify their citizenship in less time and with greater reliability. Electronic records will also allow the state to verify deaths of members more quickly, allowing the state to cease benefits in a timelier manner.

Arkansas, Michigan, and Rhode Island join Massachusetts in using federal funds to help members and applications manage DRA requirements. The majority of states are focusing on chronic care management, health information technology, and fraud prevention.
