The Senate's Ways and Means budget, released on May 16, recognizes the need for the "mini-grant" program that provides education and enrollment assistance to communities. The $3.5 million continues current funding levels. At a time when the pace of health care reform is quickening and inquiries for assistance are increasing, this continued investment in community efforts is crucial.
Because the Senate and House budgets differ (Senate: $3.5 million, House: $750,000) the final FY08 amount will be determined by the Conference Committee. Made up of three Senators and three representatives, the Committee negotiates a compromise budget that will go to full legislature for vote. It is important to contact your state representative to ask the House conferees to the committee to accept the level funding proposed by the Senate.
Please take a moment to thank your state senator for the Senate's strong support for community education and enrollment assistance. Without a doubt the Senate saved the day for "mini-grant" funding.
