Wal-mart's recent decision to stock Plan B emergency contraception (the "morning-after pill") in all its pharmacies nationally is raising awareness of a Massachusetts program to expand access to this option. As part of a 2005 emergency contraception (EC) law, Massachusetts women can now get EC directly from specially trained pharmacists without their doctor's prescription. Most insurance plans, including MassHealth, cover EC.
To participate, pharmacists enroll in an accreditation program and enter into an agreement with a physician who will write a standing order for women seeking EC.
